What is the Sports Lottery?
The RN/RM Sports Lottery (RNSL) was set up in 1991 to generate non-public funds to support all levels of sport, adventure training and recreation in the Naval Service. This is achieved by enhancing existing public funds (money provided through the MOD) and by granting funds for approved activities and equipment that fall outside the scope of public funding. DIN 2007DIN02-149 - The RN/RM Sports Lottery

How can I join?
You can join the RNSL, amend ticket holdings or leave by completing a form JPAE015 or contacting Gym/unit PT staff. You can also contact the Sports Lottery office by phone or email:

The RN/RM Sports Grants and Lottery Officer
HMS TEMERAIRE, Burnaby Road, Portsmouth PO1 2HB.
tel: 02392 723806 or 9380 23806

Can I stop when I want to?
Yes, use the JPAEO15 and send it directly to the Lottery Office. Note that it will take a month to process through JPA. Those that are leaving the Service will be stopped automatically and no action from individuals is required.

Can I change my numbers?
Yes you can but remember that every valid ticket has an equal chance of winning in every weekly draw.

Do I have to check if I've won?
Prizes winners do not need to check or claim as winnings will be paid by cheque made out to the winning ticket holder and sent to their current JPA Service address. Cheques can be mailed to
alternative addresses if winners inform the Lottery Office within 4 days of the Draw date.

How do I know if I've won?
The draw is carried out by an independent person and winners will be published by signal, email, Navy News and Globe and Laurel. An archive of winners can be seen on the RN Intranet and on the RNSL website Winners and Archive.

What happens if my winner's cheque gets lost in the post, due to my drafting?
If a cheque is lost you will be sent a declaration to sign to say you have not received it. A replacement cheque will then be issued.

Winners who have not cashed their winning cheque within 3 months of issue will be sent a reminder by letter to their JPA Service address. Cheques not cashed within 6 months will be cancelled and the winnings will be returned to RNRMSL funds.

Where does the money go?
The Sports Lottery has an income of approximately £1,700,000 per annum. A massive 98.3% of this is returned to RN/RM personnel through prizes, grants to ships, establishments, Adventurous Training, Sports Tours and Sports Associations. A more detailed breakdown is at “Where does the money go?”

How do I apply for a grant?
Applications for grants from Sports Lottery funds should be submitted to the RNRM Sports grants and Lottery Officer at HMS Temeraire, using SL Form 1. The Guidelines and Criteria for applicants and information regarding Overseas Visits by Naval Service sports teams must be carefully followed.

What if I have a complaint?
If you have any complaint or concern regarding the operation of your Sports Lottery then you should contact the RNRMSL manager in the first instance. If you are then not satisfied with the outcome the matter will be referred to the Commanding Officer HMS TEMERAIRE who is independent of the management of RNRMSL. Complaints procedures and information can also be found at: www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk

What do I do if I have a gambling problem?
The RNRMSL management recognises that for a very small minority of Naval Service personnel gambling in any form can lead to a range of problems for individuals and families. If you would like information on how to gamble safely, visit www.gambleaware.co.uk. If you or someone you know has been adversely affected by gambling you can contact Gamcare on 08456000133 or visit www.gamcare.org.uk.
